Afghanistan, the Taliban, and Osama Bin Laden

Kurt Lohbeck

Former News Correspondent in Afghanistan

In the wake of large-scale terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are struggling to understand the deep-rooted hatred of American ideals that could lead to such attacks. Who is Osama Bin Laden, alleged mastermind of the attacks and America's deadliest adversary? How extensive is Bin Laden's worldwide terrorist organization, al Qaeda? What role does the fundamentalist Taliban regime in Afghanistan play? What options are available to the US as we formulate a response? Kurt Lohbeck will share his insights and perspectives on America's new war against terrorism.

For nearly a decade until 1993, Kurt Lohbeck was the only full-time American news correspondent in Afghanistan, where he covered the Afghan War for all three major U.S. television networks. His experiences “on the ground” include gaining the confidence of guerrilla chieftain Abdul Haq, being wounded twice in the course of covering deadly engagements between the tribal resistance and the Soviet invaders, and having tea with Osama Bin Laden. Mr. Lohbeck is a resident of Albuquerque, and the author of “Holy War, Unholy Victory: Eyewitness to the CIA's Secret War in Afghanistan”.
