Ambassador Vygaudas Usackas

Lithuanian Ambassador to the United States

On November 22, 2002 at the NATO Summit at Prague, seven candidate states, including Lithuania, were invited to join the North Atlantic Alliance. Lithuanian Ambassador Usackas will present Lithuania's position and expectations on this matter starting with broader context of a new NATO and finishing with Lithuania's actual contribution to this organization.

Ambassador Usackas became Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to the United States of America and to the United Mexican States in 2001. Prior to that, he was the Chief Negotiator for Lithuania&##9s Accession Negotiations with the European Union. From 1996 to 1999, Ambassador Usackas was with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, where he held several positions including Director of the Political Department, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Ambassador for Special Missions. In the early 1990s, Ambassador Usackas was Counselor at the Mission to the EU, and Representative for Relations with NATO. He graduated from Vilnius University, Faculty of Law, and studied political sciences at Oslo (Norway) and Arhus (Denmark) universities.
