Harold Rhode

Harold Rhode currently serves as an advisor on the Islamic World in the Office of the Secretary of Defense - Net Assessment for long range planning. From 1990-1992, he served as the Turkish Desk officer in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

After having taught Islamic history at the University of Delaware and written many articles from late 1970 to mid 1980, he joined the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy at the Pentagon in May 1982 as an advisor to Richard Perle on Turkey and the Islamic world.

Mr. Rhode has traveled extensively throughout the Islamic world and has studied and done research in universities and libraries in Egypt, Isreal, Syria, Jordan, Iran, Afghanistan and Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Kazakstan.

Harold Rhode received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in Ottoman History in 1979. He speaks Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Hebrew, and French and reads Spanish and Italian.
