57th Program Year - Ninth MeetingMay 15, 2006Albuquerque Petroleum ClubThe Long Struggle: The Arab World Versus the Christian WestMilton Viorst has covered the Middle East as a journalist and scholar since the 1960s. He was The New Yorker's Middle East correspondent, and his work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, and The Wall Street Journal. He has written six books on the Middle East. His most current book, "Storm from the East: The Struggle between the Arab World and the Christian West," was published on April 25, 2006. Mr. Viorst has served as a correspondent and a syndicated political columnist for several newspapers and written articles for magazines and journals. He served as a Woodrow Wilson Foundation visiting fellow from 1973-1979 and writing faculty for the American Academy of Judicial Education from 1978-1990. He has served as a board member for the following organizations: International Center for Peace in the Middle East, Americans for Peace Now, Institute of World Affairs, Middle East Policy Council (national advisory committee), and was Chairman for the Fund for Investigative Journalism from 1969-1979. Professional memberships include PEN, Authors Guild, Washington Independent Writers, Society of Professional Journalists, National Writers Union, Middle East Institute (senior scholar), and the Council of Foreign Relations. Mr. Viorst received a B.A. in history from Rutgers, an M.A. in history from Harvard University, an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University, and served as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Lyon in France. Currently, Mr. Viorst lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife, the poet Judith Viorst. Members of the UNM World Affairs Delegation Model United Nations Team will be available during the Social Hour to talk about and show pictures of their recent trip to China. |
