58th Program Year - Eighth MeetingApril 23, 2007Tanoan Country ClubThe Situation in Oaxaca -- and ChiapasDr. Raul Benitez comes to us from the School of International Service of the American University in Washington, D.C. He was on the faculty of Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), where he was a professor of international relations, beginning in 1991. He has been a visiting scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the National Defense University, and has taught at Columbia University. Dr. Benitez received his PhD in Latin American Studies from UNAM. He received a MA in International Economy and Politics from the Center of Investigation in Economy in Mexico. Dr. Benitez's research interests include North American policy relations, national security, and peace negotiations. He is author and editor of numerous books and book chapters, including Chiapas: los Desafios de la Paz (with Cynthia J. Arnson), and the chapter "Security and Governance: the Urgent Need for State Reform," in Mexico's Politics and Society in Transition, edited by Joseph S. Tulchin and Andrew D. Selee. Dr. Benitez's published work includes "National Security and Armed Forces in Mexico: Challenges and Scenarios at the End of the Century" in the Working Papers Series, and "Chiapas: Crisis and Disruption of Social Cohesion -- Challenges for Negotiations in the 21st Century" in Human Security, Conflict Prevention and Peace. Dr. Benitez will teach North American Security Issues at the School of International Service this fall. |
