Kanin is Director of Ethnic and Religious Identity Studies on the Long-Range Analysis Unit of the National Intelligence Council. He previously had been Senior Political Analyst with the Red Cell, an alternative analysis and brainstorming group at the Central Intelligence Agency. Before September 11, 2001, he worked in a similar capacity on the Interagency Balkan Task Force, where he was responsible for assessing longer-term trends in the Balkans as well as prospects for specific countries. Dr. Kanin has traveled extensively in Europe and the Balkans and was a member of the U.S. delgation to the Rambouillet peace talks on Kosovo in 1999. From 1993-1996, Dr. Kanin was Deputy National Intelligence Officer for Europe. Previously he had held various analytical positions in CIA's Directorate of Intelligence. In 1981, he served as a member of the U.S. delegation to the Madrid Review Conference of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE). Before joining the CIA, Dr. Kanin taught at Boston College and Framingham (Massachusetts) State College. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and holds a Ph.D. in international relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. |
