Germany: in Search of Order in a Chaotic World

Thomas Bagger

Dr. Bagger is Political Counselor in the German Embassy in Washington, D.C. He previously served in the German missions in Ankara (2002-2006), and Prague (1996-1998). From 1998 to 2002 he held the position of speechwriter for then- Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer.

He joined the diplomatic service in 1992 after two years as a research associate at SWP, Germany's premier international affairs think-tank. Dr. Bagger holds a Ph.D. in political science from Munich University and an M.A. in international relations from the University of Maryland at College Park, where he was a Fulbright student in 1989 and 1990. He carried out his military service during 1984-1986.

Dr. Bagger was born in Lueneburg, Lower Saxony, Germany, on October 21, 1965. He is married, and he and his wife have three children.
